Armenian Diaspora Survey is looking to engage an experienced qualitative researcher in each of the four locations for the 2020 round of the survey. The fieldwork will take place from October to mid December 2020.
Locations: Brussels, London/Manchester, Michigan, Paris, Rostov-on-Don.
Led by a team of academics, researchers and experts, the Armenian Diaspora Survey (ADS) aims to provide a snapshot of the contemporary Armenian Diaspora. The project fills a critical gap in the knowledge of the Diaspora and provides evidence-based understanding of the multilayered and diverse aspects of diasporic life. The project is funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, and administered by the Armenian Institute, London.
The pilot round was conducted in 2018 in four communities: Boston, Cairo, Marseille and Pasadena and in 2019 in 17 communities in four countries: Argentina, Canada (Montreal), Lebanon and Romania. ADS conducts research in selected cities through a survey, depth interviews and observations. A team of researchers record the views and concerns of people who identify themselves as Armenians. This includes those who actively take part in community affairs, but also those who are not active for a variety of reasons.
• Degree in social science or related disciplines,
• experience of coordinating survey work, ideally in the role of manager of quantitative data collection,
• working knowledge of English and Armenian,
o for Rostov-on-Don researcher: proficiency in Russian
o for Paris researcher: proficiency in French
• experience of coordinating team activities,
• basic computer literacy, comfortable usage of MS Office package.
• experience with quality control of large projects,
• experience of working with volunteers,
• experience with image scanning / processing software,
• Knowledge of statistical analysis software SPSS.
The Survey Manager will need to have some experience of coordinating survey work or other similar activities. They will be provided with survey protocols, and briefings explaining the role and the process of organisation.
The role involves organisation of the survey related activities, including
• help with localising the questionnaire, and adapting the translated version of the questionnaire to
the national conditions,
• ensuring distribution and collection of the questionnaires,
• contacting and establishing relations with the individual facilities/organisations/events,
• working with the local advisory committee to ensure access and possible permissions,
• managing the team of volunteer data collectors,
• first hand quality checks on the completed questionnaires,
• management of invitations to the online survey,
• providing information about ADS, and re-directing potential queries and enquiries
• help and assist other team members, including Qualitative Researcher, and
• communications with the key people involved in the survey in the community.
The Survey Manager will take part in regular debriefings with the ADS management and other national
teams, to report on the ongoing progress and potential pitfalls in the progress of the survey. For reporting
and analysis, they will only be required to provide information for the technical report and organisation
(timings, number of questionnaires completed, locations etc).
The Survey Manager will report to the ADS Director and Survey Method Advisor at the headquarters in London.
The ADS will provide protocols and guidelines for organising the survey. A training will be provided at the outset of the project.
Level of Effort and Remuneration
We expect that the role will take between 15 and 30 hours per week for the duration of fieldwork preparation stage, fieldwork stage, and data entry/scan. The expected duration is 8 working weeks, but may take 1 or 2 weeks longer. The remuneration will be in gross for the completion of all tasks described in the role. The candidate will be responsible for paying local and/or national taxes from that amount. The payment will be done in two equal installments, the first payment immediately after the start of the fieldwork, and the second one following the acceptance of all deliverables.
Renumeration will be discussed with short listed applicants, who will be interviewed (online) by ADS personnel for a final selection. Additionally, a small amount will be foreseen for local expenses related to the implementation of the survey, such as printing the questionnaires, and some travel. Such expenses would need to be pre-
approved b ADS and documented.
